About Firebird Raceway
Firebird Raceway was founded in 1968 by the late Bill New and his wife, Ellanor. Built from the ground up along the Highway 16 corridor, the facility was strategically designed on a south-to-north layout that has become familiar to generations of racers and fans. Hosting nearly 50 racing days each season, the NHRA member track traditionally opens competition in April and continues through mid-October, welcoming tens of thousands of racers and spectators annually.
Today, Firebird Raceway is operated by the second generation of the New family—often referred to as the “New Crew.” They remain committed to the family’s longstanding mission: to provide a clean, first-class facility where racers and spectators can enjoy the sport of drag racing. Known as the “Firebird Experience,” the team prides itself on delivering affordable, action-packed entertainment for fans of all ages.
Firebird also helps launch Idaho’s motorsports season each year with the Boise Roadster Show, held at Expo Idaho. As the state’s largest motorsports event, the three day and night show features an impressive collection of hot rods, custom vehicles, and trucks, traditionally taking place on the second weekend of March.
With nearly six decades of continuous operation, Firebird Raceway has earned formal recognition through its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its legacy as one of the Northwest’s most historic and respected drag racing facilities.
